MEDIA

I have called this section Media because that is the technically correct name for this group of categories. But I think of them as surfaces and for convenience will refer to them as that, even though I am fully aware that “In Water” cannot really be considered as a surface.

The reason I have grouped competitions into these categories is that something very interesting appears when you do so. If a sign is positively significant (i.e., there are more medallists of that sign than would be expected by chance) for even one surface, then that sign is not negatively significant for any surface.

And the converse works as well. If a sign is negatively significant (i.e., there are less medallists of that sign than would be expected by chance) for even one surface, then that sign is not positively significant for any surface.

I’ll start with Aries which is a positively significant sign.

 Aries

Aries athletes have highly significantly more medallists than expected for all competitions played on ice. This is not at all surprising, considering how many Aries Ice Hockey medallists there are.

There are also significantly more Aries athletes on the Snow, on the Range and on Water. This again is no surprise because of the high number of Aries Nordic Skiing, Shooting and Rowing medallists. Combining all competitions that take place on these surfaces gives a probability for Aries of more than 1 in 300,000. This probability can be increased slightly by adding in those competitions taking place on the Field and also those on a Floor. For the purpose of showing Aries strengths, the chart shows only those surfaces where they are significantly better than chance.

All Competitions occurring on Ice, Water, Ranges or Snow

Taurus

Taurus is a negatively significant sign and in fact the above chart showing Aries strengths also highlights Taurus weaknesses. For Taurus athletes receive significantly less medals than chance for these surfaces. This is mainly because they are significantly poorer for Ice competitions, despite their female Ice Hockey players, and because they also perform less well than average on Snow.

But their medal count is relatively worse on Track and Floor competitions even than on Ice and Snow, so I have combined all these to produce the next chart. The probability of Taurus athletes receiving as few medals as this is nearly 1 in 1,000.

 Gemini

As with Taurus, Gemini athletes also receive significantly less medals than chance for surfaces on which Aries is best. This time it is those competitions on Snow and on Ranges that have caused this to happen. In particular, Gemini athletes seem to do particularly poorly in the Alpine skiing competitions with a negative probability of more than 1 in 100 and so it is these skiing competitions I am showing below.

All Alpine, Freestyle, Cross Country and Nordic Combined Skiing Competitions

 Cancer

Cancer is not significantly better or worse than expected by chance for any specific surface. In that respect, it performs as expected in its role of a control sample.

It is a different story, however, for these competitions which take place over more than one surface. This is the weakness of certain Cancer athletes. The chart below shows this. Cancer is highly significantly negative (almost 1 in 1,000).

In a way, I regard this significance as something of a joke played on me. This is because my Ph.D. thesis was on habitat selection by crabs. It is certainly true that crabs are choosy about their particular habitat. There is even one species that is called the coconut crab because it cracks coconuts with its pincers to eat the contents. Some locals even use them as guards for their coconut plantations!

Leo

There is a remarkable similarity in the surfaces that cause Leo and Taurus to have significant negative differences. They both highly significantly fewer medallists (over 1 in 500 in the case of Leo) than expected on Floors, Pitches and Tracks. Lions and bulls are big beasts and obviously do not appreciate being in enclosed spaces!

All Floor, Pitch and Track Competitions

The low number of Sagittarian medallists has nothing to do with their performance on pitches and tracks. They actually have a slightly higher than expected number of athletes for these surfaces. The exact reason for the significantly low count will be shown under the Sagittarius heading.

Virgo

Virgo’s “weak” surfaces are quite peculiar to Virgo. Looking back at previous charts in this section will show that they do not perform particularly badly in any of them. However, for Field, Arena, Trench and Ice competitions they are very highly significantly poorer than expected by chance (probability greater than 1 in 350).

 Libra

Like Gemini athletes, snow is the only surface that Libran athletes score significantly poorly on. But unlike Gemini, it is not skiing that lets them down. Instead, it is a set of competitions that demand split second decision making. Now, anyone who knows anything about Libran personality traits knows that Librans, because they like to balance things up, take their time to come to a decision. Speed trials are not their thing and I say that as a Libran and after careful consideration. The chart below demonstrates this. Libran athletes are highly significantly below expected with a 1 in 2,500 probability.

All Freestyle Skiing, Biathlon, Bobsleigh and Luge Competitions

Scorpio

Scorpions are quite restricted in their habitats and it seems like Scorpio medallists restrict themselves to certain surfaces as well. Scorpios have significantly fewer medallists than expected in competitions in water, on ice, on roads and in the boxing ring. Combining just these four media gives a probability of 1 in over 500,000.

All Competitions on Ice, In Water, on Roads or in a Ring

Sagittarius

When looking at Leo in this section, I implied that the low number of medals won by Sagittarius in the chart was caused by those competitions occurring on Floors. Actually, it is more specific than that. It is the close contact sports of Judo and Wrestling where the medallists are really lacking. It is significant at almost the 1 in 1,000 level.

 Capricorn

With Capricorn, we are back with the positively significant signs and so it will stay with Aquarius and Pisces. Capricorn athletes win significantly more medals than expected in the boxing Ring, on Snow, across Country on the Golf course, (Golf was an Olympic sport in 1900 & 1904) and in the Air, (i.e., Diving and certain Gymnastics) . These competitions, when combined, take them to over the 1 in 100,000 probability level.

Aquarius

Anything Capricorn can do, Aquarius can do better seems to be the motif here. Although the significance level of Capricorn above is impressive, by taking just those competitions occurring on Courts, on Floors, on Ice and on Tracks, Aquarius manages a probability of over 1 in 2,000,000 and, by adding those competitions to those on Ranges, on Sand (Beach Volleyball), over different surfaces and in Air, this probability goes up to over 1 in 100,000,000.

PISCES

Although Pisces medallists are the best by far in water, and to a lesser extent on water, they also score well at Shooting and in the boxing Ring. This is shown in the chart below where Pisces is significant at about the 1 in 200,000 level.
