VIRGO

What sports are virgins good at? That sounds like a joke but it was a serious question. I couldn’t think of any sport and going back to ancient Rome did not help either. It just provided more jokes. Even the unforthcoming Cancer gave me a clue or two to start me off.

The only solution was to try to find something significant and try to relate it back to Virgo’s traits.

So I rephrased the question to ask in what sports do Virgo athletes get significantly more medals?

This was not much better. At the Olympic Sport level, only Baseball is even borderline significant and, although there are plenty of jokes about virgins and bases, there is no real connection between Baseball and young maidens. For a start, Olympic Baseball is a male only sport.

Finding the well to be dry at the Sport/Discipline level, I then turned to individual competitions to see if there were any competitions with significances that could sensibly be grouped together. The two highest significances were both Men’s Alpine Skiing events. They were the Super Giant Slalom and the Downhill Skiing events. These competitions are linked because several athletes have obtained Olympic medals in both of them and, even on their own, have a probability significance of 1 in 2,500. However, by including the Men’s Alpine Skiing Combined competition which also has Olympic skiers in common with them (Kjetil André Aamodt of Norway has even won medals in all three competitions), and also the Men’s Moguls competition, this probability can be increased to beyond 1 in 5,000.

The next most significant probability after the two skiing competitions is the Men’s 400 m. hurdles, followed not too far behind by the Men’s 110 m. hurdles. Adding in the Men’s 200m. hurdles, which was run in 1900 and 1904 only, the significance came out at a probability more than 1 in 5,000.

Considering that male Virgo athletes were so good at short distance hurdles, it was also reasonable to look at the Men’s Athletics sprint events. It came as no surprise to find out that Virgos were significantly better than expected by chance here also.

Combining these sprint competitions with the Men’s hurdles gives the following chart.

All Men’s Hurdles and Sprint Competitions

The probability has now risen to 1 in 50,000.

In my opinion, to be a really successful athlete in downhill skiing, sprinting or baseball, an athlete must have super fast reflexes. And, if two athletes are similarly matched in all other departments then the one with the faster reflexes is probably going to beat the other athlete.

Combining all the above sports gives the following chart with a chance probability of over 1 in 20,000,000.

All Men’s Hurdles, Sprints, Baseball & Downhill, Combined, Moguls & Super Giant Slalom Alpine Skiing Competitions

Virgo is easily one of the most significant signs for finding related competitions in which medallists score better than chance. By that standard it is a success. However, their super-quick reflex attributes that makes them so successful in so many competitions is not recorded as an attribute of Virgo. Further research seems to be required here.
